Following her graduation, Norma embarked on a transformative experience, spending a year living on a kibbutz in Israel, a testament to her adventurous spirit and her commitment to exploring the world. Education was a central theme in Norma’s life, and she had a profound impact on the lives of children of all ages. Her career as an educator spanned many years and diverse roles, including Youth Counselor, Hebrew School Teacher, and Youth Group Advisor. Norma’s boundless dedication and passion for nurturing young minds were evident in her every endeavor.
Norma’s true calling emerged in her unwavering support and advocacy for mothers and their babies. She was approached by Chemung County (NY) Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) to create and implement a groundbreaking breastfeeding education program. Norma’s program was so successful that it became a model for counties across New York State, a testament to her innovative and compassionate approach. At the age of 50, Norma embarked on a new chapter in her life, becoming an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC). Her dedication to the cause led her to be one of the founding members of Breastfeeding USA, an organization committed to supporting mothers on their breastfeeding journeys.
Norma’s commitment was further underscored by her authorship of the training manual for Breastfeeding USA Counselors, leaving a lasting legacy for generations to come. Throughout her lifetime, she touched the lives of thousands of mothers, empowering them to embrace the beauty of breastfeeding. Norma is survived by her devoted husband of nearly 50 years, Glenn Ritter, who stood by her side through every twist and turn of their shared journey. Her love and legacy live on through her three children: Dan (Elizabeth Lear), Abigail (Joe Otter), and Chana Maya (Jeff Shein).
