John Berg Obituary, Death Cause – It is with heavy hearts that we remember John Henry Berg, a proud veteran of The Vietnam War, who passed away on August 7, 2023, at the age of 77. John’s life was marked by courage, dedication, and a deep sense of generosity. In 1967, John served as a team leader in the elite 9th Infantry Division Long Range Patrol. His commitment to duty and bravery led him to graduate from the special forces to Recondo school in Nha Trang, often referred to as “the most dangerous school in the military.” His service to his country was a testament to his unwavering dedication. John was not only a hero in the military but also in his community. He was very well known and active in the American Legion and Army Ranger Association. He was a center of hospitality at reunions of his LRRP/Ranger unit, creating lasting bonds with his fellow soldiers.
After his time in Vietnam, John resumed his college studies and graduated from Mankato State, showcasing his commitment to continuous learning and personal growth. Generosity was a defining characteristic of John’s life. He regularly donated to multiple animal shelters, demonstrating his love for animals. He also supported organizations such as Braille Books for Blind Children, the US Department Sheriffs Association, and The American Heart Association, leaving a positive impact on various causes. John’s passions included hunting, traveling, attending LRRP/Ranger reunions, enjoying meals at restaurants, indulging in buttered popcorn at the movie theatre, and spending quality time with his family and friends. These moments of joy were a testament to his vibrant spirit and zest for life.
John is preceded in death by his wife, Cheryl Berg, and his sister, Phyllis Roxie Damon-Mulazzi. He is survived by his long-time partner, Ellen Christofferson, and stepchildren, Eric Christofferson and Kari Smith. He is also remembered by his siblings: Jeane Marie Rodriguez, Sandra Mae Deneault-McNitt, Jennifer O’Hara Damon, Joseph Valiant Damon, William Leslie Damon, and Kurt Fredrick Damon. John and Ellen’s love story began on a blind date in 199. As we remember John Henry Berg, we honor his service, his generosity, and the love and joy he shared with those fortunate enough to know him.
