Gilberto Mendez Obituary, Death Cause – The identity of the person who perished in the horrible event that took place in Belmar on Sunday is being revealed, and we do so with the utmost regret. Gilberto Mendez Jr., 42 years old, was a resident of Roselle Park, Union County, and had been retrieved from the ocean earlier on that fatal day. Unfortunately, he did not survive. During this incomprehensibly trying moment, our thoughts and prayers are with his family and other loved ones. A plea for help was placed to the Belmar Police Department at 6:06 p.m. on Sunday evening, indicating that there were swimmers in danger off of the Sixth Avenue beach.
The call was immediately attended to by law enforcement, and we are extremely appreciative to the heroic actions of the Belmar lifeguards and members of the water rescue team who courageously entered the ocean to save five swimmers. One of the swimmers continued to be unresponsive despite their heroic efforts, and they were eventually forced to pull the unconscious person from the water at the beach on Fifth Avenue. Tragically, Gilberto Mendez Jr. could not be brought back to life at the Jersey Shore University Medical Center in Neptune after being sent there in an emergency. Two more swimmers were taken to the hospital after the initial four were brought there.
The tragic passing of Gilberto Mendez Jr. serves as a sobering and painful reminder of the perils that may be hiding in the waterways that we cherish. Our neighborhood is mourning the loss of a fellow resident together, and we are keeping his loved ones and friends in our thoughts and prayers as they try to cope with this unfathomable tragedy. May Gilberto Mendez Jr. rest in peace, and may his memory serve as a reminder of the significance of maintaining vigilance and water safety at all times, but especially when one is enjoying leisure activities.
